Ending the NHRA Carolina Nationals weekend with her eighth consecutive number one qualifier and a runner-up finish, Brittany Force has moved into the NHRA Top Fuel points lead while in Funny Car, John Force had a semifinal finish and Robert Hight made a first round exit.
On a role already leading the points by one thanks to three quality qualifying sessions, Brittany Force’s impressive 3.689-second pass defeated Arthur Allen in the first round. The win matched Force with veteran racer Spencer Massey in the second round where she would run 3.734-seconds to defeat Massey.
In a critical semi-final match-up, Force would face reigning champion Steve Torrence who is sitting just behind Force in the points standings. Force and her David Grubnic and Mac Savage led team put down another stout 3.721-second pass to take down the champ and advance to the final round. In the 28th final round appearance of her career, Force would face rookie of the year contender Josh Hart who would pick up the win with his better starting line reaction time of 0.044 to Force’s 0.072-second reaction time.
After a bye in the opening round of Funny Car, John Force matched up with eventual race winner Tim Wilkerson in the second round. It was a solid side-by-side race with Force leaving first. On paper, Force won the second round on a hole shot with his 3. 975-second pass at 301.40 mph and reaction time of 0.078 but the 16-time champion had a centerline infraction and hit a cone, disqualifying the run and docking Force 15 points.
Robert Hight ran into trouble early during his first-round match-up with Terry Haddock and Haddock was able to take the win.
The NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series continues next weekend in St. Louis with the NHRA Midwest Nationals on September 24-26th.
